With its proximity to Mt. Chimney and its natural heat, Lavaridge was one of the areas most affected by the seasonal heat wave. Up here, the air feels cloying and thick in Orion's lungs. He'd ditched his normal ranger gear for shorts and a sleeveless shirt, but he still found himself sweating profusely. The poor Pokemon didn't have the option of changing clothes.[break][break]

He's to meet up with his ranging partner in the Pokemon Center, and he's more than happy to escape into the cool interior. They've got a stand set up to provide any passing trainers with water, and Orion gratefully fills one of the little paper cups and downs it in one go.[break][break]

He's filling it again when the door opens and he recognizes one of the other rangers, hailing him with a free hand.[break][break]

"Matthew, right?" They'd never met, but Orion knows of most other rangers. They were a large group that felt pitifully small when it came to dealing with all the region's problems. "You here for Operation Ice Cube?"[break][break]

He flashes a quick, awkward smile with the joke.

For this occasion, Matthew had busted out the hair-clips. Regardless of how feminine it looked to peel his hair back from his sweaty forehead, it was all about comfort and function. He was far from a fashionable man, and he'd rather not feel ten pounds of dark hair sweating against his eyepatch. That stupid thing was annoying enough in the humidity.[break][break]

He's wearing a short-sleeved white shirt, already drenched in sweat. But honestly, the man is oblivious to it. Sweat just meant he was working hard, even though he hadn't even gotten started yet.[break][break]

Matthew cracks his neck as he approaches, prepared to get down to the job when his partner makes the effort to introduce themselves. And in doing so, breaks the ice with a classic dad joke. It throws Matt right off of his groove but enables a surprised laugh out of the man.[break][break]

"Yeah - that's a funny name for it. I like it."[break][break]

He opts to fill his own tiny paper cup with water.

Matt takes the joke in stride, and Orion decides he's a good dude.[break][break]

Unlike Matt, however, Orion hadn't the forethought to clip his hair back or find some other solution to keep it out of the way. He finds himself frequently pushing it back from his forehead, jostling his sunglasses as he did so.[break][break]

"There's a daycare nearby; you might've seen it if you came through the Pass?" He doesn't wait for confirmation, presses on: "Apparently they've got their hands full with the heat wave. The baby Pokemon aren't handling it too well."[break][break]

He fills his paper cup for a third time and downs it, a last-ditch effort to cool off before reluctantly tossing it in the waste bin and turning toward the automatic doors. Time to go back into the heat.[break][break]

"You good to go?"
